EDITORIAL OF THE WEEK
Tuesday, July 3, 2007
Author: Cathy Cunningham, New York City JournalistLadies Night and Hotel Breakfasts
Celebrity sighting of the week- alas not my own
– two comedy geniuses, going up. A close actor friend of mine
was lucky enough to ride in the same voiceover recording studio
elevator as both Jerry Seinfeld and Jack Black (on two separate
occasions). Jerry apparently showed no signs of acknowledging
the avid fan standing beside him, but Jack couldn't have been
friendlier, and chatted the entire way.
Ladies - are you fighting your way through a difficult Tuesday
at work, boss driving you nuts? A light at the end of the tunnel
is available at Lea ( 230 Park Ave, at Grand Central). Every
Tuesday after 8pm Lea bar offers free drinks to ladies - yes,
free. Whether it is a way of enticing the female form into a
predominantly male office environment, keeping the gentleman
drinkers happy by surrounding them with happy women as opposed
to the colleagues' they have been looking at all day, or simply
to celebrate Tuesday - who cares when you can sip on delicious
martinis for the mere price of a tip. If you get hungry, tapas
and sushi are on the menu for a reasonable price.
For those of us who cannot afford to stay in the W hotel, we can
at least pretend we can by having breakfast there! A business
meeting brought me to the W Union Square (16th and Park Ave) and
while the portions may not be as large as deli breakfasts, the
service and surroundings make up for it. The open face omelette
($13) was chosen by my companion, while I opted for the granola
($11 - how boring you may say, but with layers of yoghurt,
granol and fresh berries I was not disappointed, and felt rather
healthy!). The W's breakfast room is somewhere that almost makes
you feel as though you are out for an evening meal, the
minimalist seting and jazz makes for a new and interesting way
to start the day.
I have heard nothing but great things about Shakespeare in the
Park's Romeo and Juliet . The news has even traveled across the
Atlantic to Scotland, where my best friend has already put it on
her 'to do' list when she visits next week. Michael Greif is the
director of the classic tale of star crossed lovers, which stars
Lauren Ambrose of Six Feet Under fame. Scrubs' Zach Braff was
seen canoodling with a recent love in the park, as the pair
watched the performance – if it's good enough for a Hollywood
star…. Tickets are free, and available on the day of the
performance from 1pm to 3pm at The Public Theater (425 Lafayette
Street) but expect long lines.
If thunderstorms spoil outdoor performances, I hear that Evening
is the movie to see this summer. Claire Danes, real life beau
Hugh Dancy, the gorgeous Patrick Wilson (from the 'I can do
anything better than you can' Gap commercial) and Toni Colette
star in this heartwarming tearjerker based on Susan Minot's
novel. The plot follows one woman's last few weeks on her
deathbed as she confides in her daughters the defining moments
of her life as a young woman. If that sounds a little morose for
the July 4 holiday, the action-packed Live Free Or Die Hard is
also playing, as the comedy License to Wed. Happy July 4th!!!!!
