EDITORIAL OF THE WEEK
Thursday, July 6, 2006
Author: Cathy Cunningham, New York City Journalist'What! Can the devil speak true....?' !
Do you ever feel
as though your boss is related to Satan? Go see 'The Devil Wears
Prada' and feel much better...! Meryl Streep plays the
fabulously wicked Miranda Priestly, editor of 'Runway' magazine
and destroyer of Andy Sachs' (Anne Hathaway) life when she hires
her as her latest minion. The screen sparkles with razor sharp
humor, witty dialogue, and a killer wardrobe arranged by
Patricia Field of Sex and the City fame. Hathaway plays the
adorably clueless new fish in a sea of fashion sharks, trying to
hold her own while looking fabulous and avoiding Priestly's
verbal whipping. Edgier than traditional chick-flicks, this
movie is a must-see for anyone, and (dare I say it in July) the
film of the year.
My No.1 recommendation this week is to go see a gig this
Sunday... not just any gig however. How about seeing a New
Jersey boy who is about to sky-rocket through the stratosphere
on the wings of his success? I last saw Bryan Fenkart perform a
couple of months
back. His music is a sublime blend of indie, rock and country,
and his voice like silk. I defy any music-lover not to love him
on first listen; likewise I challenge anyone to show me a singer
who sparkles and exudes such passion and feeling during a
performance! Bryan's contagious energy lights up the stage and
leaves you wanting more. Catch him this Sunday, July 10th at The
Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard St. Be one of those annoyingly smug
people who in a short time can say 'I saw him BEFORE he was
huge!'. The show starts at 8pm and there's a cover charge of $8,
you'll understand how miniscule this price is when you
experience the unique talent that is Bryan Fenkart. For a sneak
preview of what to expect check out
www.bryanfenkart.com.
I recently spotted Liza Minelli coming out of Big Daddy's Diner
(19th and Park), isn't it nice to know that even glitterati
megastars enjoy a $10 burger and some tater tots now and again?
Although they do serve delicious burgers in truth....! If you've
never been to this Gramercy Park restaurant I highly recommend
it; the portions are huge, food cheap, atmosphere fun and
service fab in this kitsch colorful eatery. At the weekend you
can stroll in up until 4 a.m and receive as good service as you
would at any lunchtime.
Central Park is serving a platter of free entertainment and
culture now that the warmer months are upon us. This Friday
(July 8th) you can watch 'Noche Flamenco', a display of
traditional flamenco dancing on the Summer Stage in Central Park
from 8pm until 10.30pm. If you prefer Shakespeare to sashaying
check out Macbeth directed by
Moisés Kaufman and starring Jennifer Ehle (This Year's Love) at
the Delacorte Theater this Saturday (8.30 pm). Tickets are
available from 1pm from the theater itself, or from 1-3pm at the
Public Theater at 425 Lafayette Street. Avoid tardiness to
ensure some bard-iness....!
