Cathy Cunningham is a recent graduate and new addition to
Manhattan's social scene. Originally from Scotland, she has over
five years of experience in news journalism and is presently a

EDITORIAL OF THE WEEK
Sunday, July 16, 2006
Author: Cathy Cunningham, New York City JournalistBowery and Brunch and Beasts…oh my!
Celeb sighting of the week- Singer Rhianna waiting for her ride
outside of Union Square's W hotel. The itsy bitsy lady is even
more beautiful in the flesh, yet seemed unaware of the glances
headed in her direction on Park Avenue South that day. In hand,
an equally gorgeous puppy; presumably the pampered pooch was not
thinking “SOS please, someone help me” as it was lifted into the
waiting air-conditioned limo..!
On Saturday night my friend and I hit a bar we've walked by many
a time in the city of almost the same name: ‘Mannahatta’.
‘Mannahatta’ (Bowery and Bleeker) is an exquisite lounge /club/
tapas restaurant where the choice is yours- sit outside on the
deck and watch the bright lights of city, resplendent against
the night; go downstairs to dance the night away or sit on the
fence (not literally, you would likely be escorted out for that)
and chill in the chic bar area. We opted for the outside option
and shared a bottle of the house red ($32). The service was
fantastic, the servers friendly and stylish, and the atmosphere
perfect for a Saturday night.
What better way to begin a New York Sunday than brunch with your
friends? And what better brunch than one that includes unlimited
mimosas/champagne, all for $12.95? My new favorite brunchery in
the city is ‘Artepasta’, (81 Greenwich Avenue at 11th St). The
selection is huge, service quick and mimosas.. pretty strong! My
advice is to partake of the brunch on a Sunday when your most
pressing concern is what section of the NY Times to read first,
rather than when you have some heavy machinery to operate, or
mensa-level problems to solve.
As a girl who loves boats, I thought it only right that I should
try one of the many cruises the Circle Line has to offer. Due to
some miscalculation of departures, I ended up riding 'The Beast'
high-power speed-boat around New York Harbor. Normally someone
who enjoys sea-faring whilst relaxing and possibly sipping on a
cosmo, the idea of a boat you have to hold onto the edges of for
dear life, while seeing Manhattan fly by at the speed of light
between mouthfuls of sea-water, did not appeal quite as much…
However, I must admit I loved it! For $18 you buy an experience
you won't forget in a hurry- yes you go really fast, yes you may
worry when the captain reiterates where the life-jackets are,
yes you will be SOAKED and passers-by may wonder afterwards if
you actually took a dip in the Hudson…but is it fun..? Oh
yeah....! The Beast leaves from Pier 83, hourly and each ride
lasts an exhilarating 30 minutes, set to music while a
first-mate heckles the crowd on board.
If a slightly more relaxing weekend is your plan, The Scissor
Sisters have been confirmed as the headline act for the Village
Voice’s Siren Music Festival this Sunday in Coney Island. The
event begins at noon and is scheduled to end at 9p.m; it’s
completely free and the line-up includes many other bands such
as She Wants Revenge, Stars, Art Brut, Tapes 'N Tapes, the
Stills, the Cribs, Celebration, and Dirty on Purpose as well as
DJs from MisShapes club. Or there’s always the rollercoaster….
