EDITORIAL OF THE WEEK
Sunday, July 23, 2006
Author: Cathy Cunningham, New York City JournalistShort, Sharks & SATC
This week Martin Short's new theater extravaganza, Fame Becomes
Me opens on Broadway. The show has already hit the West Coast,
with rave reviews. Conceived by Tony Award winner Short (Inner
space, Three Amigos, Father of the Bride)and Hairspray's Marc
Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the show is expected to feature Short
reprising some of his most famous characters, such as SCTV’s Ed
Grimley and other creations from his Saturday Night Live days,
as well as his cable creation Jiminy Glick. Previews open July
22nd and I for one will be in line to indulge in the obscenely
talented Mr. Short.
Sex and the City fans still mourning the loss of the fantastic
four (two years have passed since the last episode aired,
although re-runs on TBS do act as a temporary band-aid) can do
as the girls do in every episode and grab a breakfast or lunch
at Cafeteria (17th St and 7th Avenue). This sleek restaurant has
provided the backdrop for many a SATC scene. Whether the
presence of Carrie and Co., or the cuisine itself is responsible
for the buzzing atmosphere is unknown. Either way, I strongly
recommend the food here at this small but perfectly formed
eatery. Set aside some time for a Sunday brunch- arrive after
1pm and you will likely have to stand in line beside the bar
area (although why not have a mimosa to kill some time?!) for
roughly 30 minutes.
For some alternate SATC nostalgia after the sun goes down try
Tao (58th St. and Park Ave), another previous on-set location.
Tao is the largest Asian restaurant in NYC, and also a
stunningly chic bar/ lounge/ celeb-viewing spot. It counts Sir
Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, and Robert DeNiro amongst its
clientele, although the crowd is a nice fusion of different
walks…from NY’s sidewalks. A 16ft Buddha resides over the
sumptuous space, with artifacts from China, Thailand and Japan
around every corner. Tao conforms to the normal midtown prices
(entrees $17-32), but also offers a mid-week lunch prix-fixe
menu, with three delicious courses for $24.
If your pennies are few and far between, fear not: the city is
serving up a range of options for free entertainment this week.
On Sunday (July 23rd) Hudson River Park at Pier 54 is hosting
free Latin dance lessons to the sounds of Los Hermanos Cólon. If
you prefer sharks to sashaying, the park is also hosting a
showing of Jaws next Wednesday at 8.30 pm. If neither salsa nor
man-eating fish tickle your fancy, the Washington Square Chamber
Ensemble plays a soothing tribute to Mozart next Tuesday at 8pm
in the square.
