EDITORIAL OF THE WEEK
Tuesday, September 12, 2006
Author: Cathy Cunningham, New York City JournalistFashion dah-ling..and All That Jazz...
My celeb sighting of the week... Kiefer Sutherland
walking past the W hotel, Union Square. The ‘24’ leading man
seemed to be enjoying a laid-back Labor Day, smoking a cigarette
as he headed towards Irving Place, presumably to save the world
before sunset...
Look out your pvc, fishnet tights and red lipstick... yes, just
another ordinary night for Christopher St, but also for a
special screening of cult classic ‘The Rocky Horror Picture
Show’ at the IFC Center (sixth avenue between 3rd and 4th
streets). The movie plays at midnight this Saturday ($10) and
heralds the 30th year anniversary of the movie which shot Tim
Curry into the stratosphere as the ‘Sweet Transvestite’ Frank. N
.Furter. The show will include performances by the New York cast
of the stage production. The raucous nature of the movie, fused
with some NY enthusiasm should make for an unforgettable night…
If a more subdued musical production is more to your taste,
‘Chicago’ on Broadway is receiving rave reviews lately thanks to
its latest addition – Usher as Billy Flynn. The Atlanta R&B star
is trading his bling for a bowler hat until October 1st at the
Ambassador Theater (Broadway and 49th St.). The 27 year old
showcases his renowned dance skills, while his silky smooth
vocals fit the songs perfectly. I have witnessed the
razzle-dazzle of the show on both sides of the Atlantic now, but
I hear Usher’s inclusion has catapulted it to new heights; I
also hear the tickets ($60 - $112) are selling faster than his
moves on the ladies, so book quickly (212-239-6200)!
This week, in case you haven’t noticed the sounds of Manolos
clicking and the smell of Gucci in the air, New York has been
invaded by... the rich and beautiful. One million and one models
and their entourages have descended on the city streets in honor
of Fashion Week. Catch a glimpse of the fashionistas if you
happen to pass Bryant Park, where they will be encased in a
large white marquee with a transparent section for the mere
mortals to peer through. If Gisele and co. aren’t your cup of
tea, go see a lady who makes fun of them; Joan Rivers performs
at the Cutting Room every Wednesday (24th St., between Broadway
and 6th Avenue). The Cutting Room is owned by Sex and The City’s
Chris Noth (Mr. Big). The venue/ bar is a terrific Flatiron spot
to stop for a drink; red velvet curtains in the windows are
clues to the vibe inside - the walls are decorated with
eye-catching artwork, and despite the reasonable prices,
celebrities mingle with average Joes nightly. Ms Rivers is only
one of the attractions at The Cutting Room. Check out the club’s
schedule for a host of jazz, blues and comedy listings
