EDITORIAL OF THE WEEK
Wednesday, October 4, 2006
Author: Cathy Cunningham, New York City JournalistCelestial heights (and cocktails) in MePa…
Celebrity sighting of the week, the Black Eyed
Peas exiting the Hotel Gansevoort (9th Ave and 13th St.) as I
was entering (something I said...?!). The meatpacking crowd
appeared to be relatively oblivious to the ‘Peas’ proximity
(with the exception of an excitable Scottish girl), as they
stood on the sidewalk awaiting their car. Perhaps even their
presence was overshadowed by the sophisticated charm of the
boutique Hotel, notoriously a spot to see and be seen.
The allure of the Hotel Gansevoort stems from making one feel
like a movie star from the second its threshold is crossed, via
the cobbled paving of MePa. A welcome from the suave doormen,
dressed head to toe in black, preludes the elevator trip to the
top level, the apogee of which makes one feel on top of the
world (literally). The ethereal rooftop, including a 45 foot
pool and a view of the Hudson, is where the young and beautiful
mix together as delightfully as the cocktails. The luxury
setting comes with equally extravagant drink prices ($16
average); however if you can make a drink last, or go once to
experience what everyone else is talking about, or even simply
to do a lap of the area minus beverages, you will be glad that
you did.
This weekend the New Yorker festival hits the city. Fans of the
magazine can attend a variety of events and bookreadings on
October 5th, 6th and 7th. For more details check out

A chance suggestion for après-work snacks led us to Suba (Ludlow
between Delancey and Rivington). I overstepped the 'fashionably
late' line arriving 40 minutes late; my cab from 21st Street had
taken 45 minutes. Only afterwards did I hear the delay was
caused by an accident in which a 8,000 pound chunk of crane had
fallen onto a cab on 3rd avenue- miraculously both the cabbie
and his passenger emerged unharmed, being sat on the opposite
side to where it had fallen! Not being the wealthiest of girls,
we opted to eat in the bar area as oppose to the a la carte
restaurant downstairs. My friend ordered a peach and blueberry
cava sangria ($11), a sampling sip assured me that this was a
sound choice. We ordered tapas ($4 - $13), beginning with a
cheese plate including manchego and goat's cheese. Our waiter,
sparkling like the model/actor he must have been, was charming,
helpful and funny. I will most definitely be going back.
Afterwards we took two out-of-town friends to 230 5th Avenue
(27th and 5th). I have already sung the praises of this
relatively concealed bar, but if you haven't stopped by yet, I
implore you to go asap. As the weather begins to change and the
cool breezes of Fall set in, this rooftop after-dark play-area
becomes increasingly quiet. The feeling of being somewhere
incredibly special resonates however. Of course the indoor
level, with ceiling to floor glass, is spectacular. But journey
up the illuminated winding staircase to the rooftop level to
feel your breath catch in your mouth as the city lights greet
you.. before the wonder of Manhattan takes it away.
