“Hairspray” The successful Broadway production made for the big
screen is a hit. John Travolta was awesome however, Nikki Blonsky
from Great Neck stole the show as Tracy Turnblad, really an
unbelievable performance. The film takes serious social issues from
the 60’s and makes them light, fun, and entertaining.

Tracy Turnblad is an overweight
teen destined for more. Due to
her slow metabolism and un-
popularity she winds up in
detention often, but it actually
worked in her favor. She
befriends several African
Americans there and soon finds
her calling, a dancer on the
Corny Collins show. However, despite her success she isn’t
happy with the segregation of
whites and blacks.
“Hairspray” takes a touchy subject that offends
many and makes it
funny, endearing, and easy to watch. The costume, music, and
characters are amazing. Nikki’s presence is incredible, Walken is
awesome as usual, the Queen is always a goodtime, and John is the
man. If you enjoyed the Broadway show you will love the film. On a
side note, I checked out the Film Festival last week in Bellmore, it
was great. I had the pleasure of watch several excellent short
films; “Zombie Love” was especially original and well made.
5 Stars -- Excellent Cast, Music, & Costumes, a
must see.
