Disney
Theatrical Productions continues to wow Broadway theater goers
with their productions of Mary Poppins, Tarzan, Aida, and The
Lion King. Beauty and the Beast is ending it's 13 year run on
Broadway this summer. At present, Disney is preparing to bring
it's new offering, The Little Mermaid to Denver, Colorado prior
to a Broadway opening in December 2007.
Disney has seen tremendous
growth and unparalleled success on Broadway. They institute
exciting collaborations with some of theater's most talented
creative artists. Disney has brought artists who never worked
on Broadway like Elton John, Julie Taymor, and now Francesca
Zambello will direct The Little Mermaid.
Francesca Zambello and other
of these talented creative artists will gather in Denver to
create The Little Mermaid, based on the classic and beloved
Disney film and the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
Casting is nearly complete. Rehearsals will begin in May.
Then, beginning on July 26, the process will continue with
seven weeks of previews and performances at the Ellie Caulkins
Opera House at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
Following Denver, the team will come to New York City where
Broadway will welcome the new production scheduled for Saturday,
November 3, ahead of a December 6, 2007 opening at the
Lunt-Fontanne Theater.
Dick Cook, Chairman, of The
Walt Disney Studios said, "The Little Mermaid" will be the
perfect addition to our Broadway division and it's a fantastic
opportunity for entirely new audiences to experience the magic
of this beautiful story and these timeless songs. Of course,
everyone will ask "How will they do that?" and I can promise you
that this new production won't disappoint. It's been a
fantastic journey to watch the Broadway division grow, mature,
and take enormous risks, and we are very proud that Disney has
four
musicals on Broadway, more than
any single producer on Broadway today.
Bravo, Disney Theatrical
Productions! ~*~Sandra Pianin ~*~
