Helen Marx, Jeanette Watson, and Jonathan
Rabinowitz are the trio of literary partners that make up Turtle
Point Press and its sister imprints. They meet a few times per
year to discuss their imprints: Helen Marx Books, Watson’s Books
& Co. and Rabinowitz’s Turtle Point Press. Their liaison is
unusual because of the books they produce. Their editions are
carefully and artfully designed and appeal to people who
appreciate art and books together.
Their editions reflect their vision. You will find editions of
unusual new fiction, poetry, memoirs, translations, chapbooks,
and rediscovered titles in their catalog.
Best sellers are not the norm in their circle but sometimes
there are some hits. Joan of Arc: In Her Own Words, Committed To
Memory: 100 Best Poems to Memorize, and The Deposition of Father
McGreevy by Brian O’Doherty have all been good sellers. The
O’Doherty book was shorted listed for the very prestigious
Booker Prize.
Everyone has secrets to their success. One of Turtle Point’s
major “keys to the kingdom” is that most of their titles are
published in soft cover. Soft cover editions are easier to produce
and sell. This makes it possible to publish more of them. The
look of each edition is carefully thought out and often the trio
of Marx, Watson and Rabinowitz act as their own designers.
