Author: Sandra Pianin, Renown Web ColumnistInternet Adds Dimension To Art World
|
The Internet is
changing the way the art world works. Internationally renowned
art collector, Charles Saatchi has started a site for art
students. The results are outstanding. A handful of art
students have already sold their works online.
Aspiring painters and sculptors
find it hard to get recognition. The competition to find the
next hot star is intense.
This new internet site offers a
low-cost means for thousands of patrons and artists to meet and
do business.
Oliver Varenne, art advisor for
an Australian museum, said that while he often uses the internet
for research, he would not buy a work of art without seeing it
first-hand. The new site called STUART (student art) has really
attracted Varenne's attention. He did contact some of the
artists he saw online, while on a trip to New York and bought
four pieces from them.
Art student, Ben Young, from
the Central Saint Martins College in London, said that the site
"worked out great for me." He was contacted by collector,
Bernard Jacobson, and sold him a piece of art. Young said he
might also be able to network with other students to develop a
group show.
While there is much to be said
about visiting galleries and purchasing art from unknown
artists, this site has had so much interest that it crashed
after attracting more than six million hits in one day!
